Looking Out to the Sea to See January 2023, video, 00:31

At work during the Everard Read Residency at Leeu Estates in preparation for my solo show in early 2023

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? August 2022, video, 00:47

Making hay while the sun shines in my outdoor studio. The making of a painting.

Soundscape is a thorough mish-meshing of ambient sound, music I was listening to while working, me idly strumming the ukelele, and Don Cherry's beautiful "Om Shanti Om" (1975)

The Ocean Inside the Artist's Studio, December 2021, video, 00:59

Soundscape interweaves elements from: "The Lover of Beirut" (2009) Anouar Brahem "May There Be Peace and Love and Perfection Throughout All Creation" (1968) Alice Coltrane "Snowflake" (2011) Kate Bush "Bodies in Motion" (2010) Laurie Anderson "Djelem" (2012) Barcelona Gypsy Klezmer Orchestra

Les Amis Invisible (The Invisible Friends), Alexandra Ross and David Ross, August 2021

An exhibition in France of my ink on paper nudes with my brother's black and white photographs of monuments and memorials. The two bodies of work, exhibited as pairs, were created independently and yet the resonance between the pairs of 'friends' reveals two creative lives lived parallel with shared interests and similar vision. Side by side their work finds new meanings in the narratives they suggest. Together they evoke a realm beyond the physical and the visible.

Soundscape interweaves one of Frédéric Chopin's most popular compositions, Ballade No.1 Opus 23 (1835) with Maria Callas's performance of "Pace, pace mio Dio!" from Verdi's 1862 opera, La Forza del Destino.

Paper. My first love.

Soundscape includes elements from: "The Sun on the Sea" (1983) Deux Filles "Morenika" (2009) Avishai Cohen "Untitled" (2021) Minennhle Zwane "Alma" (2014) Gustavo Santaolalla

A Suitcase in Berlin Trailer, 2010, video, 01:00 (See full length 06:49 film below)

A love letter to Berlin where I had been living and working for six months in 2010. The title is taken from Marlene Dietrich's wistful tribute, Ich Hab' Noch Einen Koffer in Berlin (I Still Have a Suitcase in Berlin). I began filming on what would turn out to be the last day of a Golden Autumn - a very beautiful, uncharacteristically dry month. That same day, the wind rose up and blew all the leaves from the trees... And then the rains came, turning the streets to a slippery, hazardous mush. I shot on a 'point-and-shoot' Canon Ixus, small enough to steal intimate close-ups of lovers in darkened bars, dance halls and clubs, where filming was strictly forbidden.

Soundscape includes: “Playing” (2009) Bugge Wesseltoft / "Fever" (1958) Peggy Lee / "I Still Have a Suitcase in Berlin" (1954) Marlene Dietrich

In Search of Lost Time, 2021, video, 00:53

This short film made twelve years after my solo exhibition, In Search of Lost Time (2009) is a journey through the drawings, etchings, monotypes, and mezzotints on the show. It begins on a train and ends in a train of thought, unfolding as a narrative of a real 24-hour long train journey across South Africa from Cape Town to Johannesburg but also traverses the intangible landscapes of memory and mind. The fleeting glimpses of the world outside the shadowy interior, briefly illuminated in the sash window, may be either real or imaginary. Likewise, the works themselves, paintings and drawings made from photographs and finally presented as imitation Polaroids, hover in the indeterminate gap between reality and illusion, fact and fiction. As the train journeys onward, passing real people and places, the traveler recalls and invents others.

Soundscape includes: "Together in Silence" (1997) Saafi Brothers / "Stimela" (1974) Hugh Masekela / "Serenade" (1826) Franz Shubert
